Rock Squad is a band-based learning unit designed to support students in primary and lower secondary school. The focus is not technical mastery of individual instruments, but helping students learn how to play together as a band. Through jamming, listening, and shared music-making, students develop the core ensemble skills needed to rehearse, perform, and eventually take ownership of their musical learning.
Once students can jam together, they are well positioned to choose their own songs, direct their own rehearsals, and continue making music independently.
What Rock Squad is for
Rock Squad supports teachers to:
- Establish early ensemble and band skills
- Transition students from whole-class playing into small groups
- Build confidence through supported jamming
- Develop listening, timing, and musical interaction
- Prepare students for informal learning pathways
It works particularly well as a pre-band or early band unit, a transition between whole-class instrumental work and independent ensembles, and a foundation for later units such as Playalongs, Recreate, and Play Now.
How Rock Squad works
Rock Squad is organised around three levels of repertoire, offering multiple entry points depending on student experience, age, and context. These levels are not fixed stages — teachers may move between them flexibly or work within a single level for an extended period.
- Learn basic instrumental technique

Gold Level repertoire
20 curated playalong tracks, each listing the chords used. Bands choose a song — the track is a scaffold, not a performance backing.
