Musical Futures non formal teaching, also known as classroom workshopping, is an innovative approach that bridges the gap between formal music education and informal learning. Inspired by the Guildhall Connect program developed at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, this methodology brings the dynamic energy of real-world music-making into the classroom. It emphasises creative, collaborative, and inclusive music-making experiences that engage all students, regardless of their prior musical background. Through carefully structured yet flexible workshop-style lessons, students develop their musical skills while exploring composition, improvisation, and performance.
At the core of this approach is the belief that music education should reflect the diverse and evolving landscape of contemporary music.
Teachers act as musical leaders and co-creators, guiding students through a process of collective music-making that draws on various genres and cultural traditions. This method fosters a sense of community within the classroom, encouraging peer learning and mutual support. By adapting the principles of the Guildhall Connect program, Musical Futures non formal teaching equips students with not only musical proficiency but also vital skills such as creativity, adaptability, and teamwork.
