What it is

Everything you need to play a song as a whole class band

One of our most popular resources. Each individual song playalong video contains everything you need for learning to play a song as a whole class band on ukulele, keyboard, bass, guitar and vocals. They open on a set-up screen using all the visual references students will have become used to through the one and two chord jams and medleys in the full Just Play resource.

Students can follow along as a class, or use the individual song URL on their own devices to take it off and learn independently, with a group of friends outside the music class, or at home.

Four versions of every song, so you can let go of the screen

In most of the playalongs you will find one or all of the versions below. They are designed to support differentiation, and to let a class move away from reliance on the video when the time is right, with the aim of bringing the musical learning into the group and away from the screen.

Tips for teachers

  • Divide students into groups to play their allocated chords at the right time
  • Allocate students the major or the minor chords to play at the right time
  • Split the chords so that they have time to move between them
  • Encourage them just to play on beat 1, giving plenty of time to move, then add in the strum patterns
  • Make sure they stop, listen and nod their heads between songs to get the feel of the new one before joining in
  • Throw in any other instruments and give students notes to play, or encourage them to play something they can hear in the music

Once your class have mastered the playalong, read more about what to do next.

Common questions

What are the four versions of each playalong?

Full video, no vocals, bass and drums only, and a click track. They exist so you can differentiate, and so a class can move away from relying on the video when the time is right. The aim is to bring the musical learning into the group and away from the screen.

Can students use these outside the classroom?

Yes. Students can follow along as a class, or use the individual song URL on their own devices to take it away and learn independently, with a group of friends outside the music class, or at home. Lesson URLs need no student account.

How do I run one with a class that has never done it?

Divide students into groups and give each group chords to play at the right time, or split major and minor chords between them. Have them play on beat 1 only at first, so there is plenty of time to move, then add strum patterns. Make sure they stop, listen and nod their heads between songs to get the feel of the new one before joining in.

Do students need to have done Just Play first?

No, but it helps. The set-up screen uses the same visual references students will have become used to through the one and two chord jams and medleys in the full Just Play resource, so a class coming from Just Play already knows how to read it.

What happens once a class has mastered a playalong?

That is the point at which to move beyond it. Play Now and Rock Squad both take classes from following a playalong towards learning a song in small groups by ear. We have written up what to do next in "So they can play. Now what?"
